Everything you need to know about the Ho'ōla iā Mauiakama Disaster Long-Term Recovery Group
The Ho'ōla iā Mauiakama Disaster Long Term Recovery Group is dedicated to helping the Maui community recover and thrive after disasters, particularly the recent wildfires. We provide comprehensive support addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical needs.
A Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG), as outlined by the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters’ Long-Term Recovery Guide, is a coordinated body of representatives from various sectors, including faith-based organizations, non-profits, government, and businesses. These groups are specifically designed to support individuals and families in disaster recovery. Each LTRG is uniquely structured to address the specific needs, resources, and cultural dynamics of its community.
While LTRGs across America may go by different names like “recovery coalition” or “community roundtable,” their mission is singular: to provide coordinated recovery services. Typically formed by local Voluntary or Community Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD/COAD), LTRGs may also receive initial support from local emergency management or FEMA staff. Their structure varies based on factors such as the disaster’s impact and community size. To operate effectively, LTRGs benefit from dedicated staff, a fiscal sponsor for fundraising, and by-laws with sub-committees to manage specific activities.
For instance, the Monroe County LTRG, established after Hurricane Irma, organized sub-committees focused on areas such as Crisis Counseling, Disaster Case Management, Volunteer Coordination, and Government Relations, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated recovery effort.
The Resources Roundtable Committee assembles funders to address unmet needs presented by disaster case managers, ensuring comprehensive recovery efforts after exhausting all available resources.
